Over the past decade, the demographic reality of Brussels has evolved significantly. As one of Europe’s super-diverse cities, Brussels presents both unique opportunities and responsibilities for its key institutions, including the police. A modern democratic police force should reflect the society it serves — representing its wide spectrum of backgrounds, experiences and worldviews. While research shows that the Brussels police continue to face challenges in integrating ethnic diversity into their ranks, these challenges also open the door to meaningful reflection, inclusive capacity-building and institutional renewal.
This research project, a partnership between Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), investigates the landscape of diversity within the Brussels police.
On this website you will find a mapping of diversity initiatives across the six Brussels police zones, complemented by ethnic diversity statistics. This overview provides a snapshot of current diversity policies and initiatives, based on in-depth research and a participatory approach with the actors involved.
